Lithuania's government has approved a mechanism for religious communities to officially register their property that was nationalized by the Soviet administration but left at their disposal to be used for religious purposes.

To get the registration, religious communities will have to apply to the Justice Ministry, which will examine whether applications are filed by actual leaders of religious communities, whether a community was indeed the legitimate owner of property before 19 June 1948 and continued using the property for religious needs.

If the building meets all the above criteria, the ministry will draft a government resolution which will allow to register property in the real estate registry.

The deadline for applications is 1 July, the planned day of enforcement of a law on the rights of religious communities and groups to religious property, the ministry has said.

There are a few hundred churches, belfries, chapels, and other religious buildings in the country that do nor have official owners or belonging to non-existent institutions.
