Nearly third of Lithuanian municipalities declare flu epidemic

The number of cases of flu and acute respiratory infections is up in Lithuania, with nearly twenty municipalities in the country having declared a flu epidemic, the Center for Communicable Diseases and AIDS has said.

On Wednesday, epidemic was declared by municipalities of Joniškis and Ukmergė districts, as well as Marijampolė city. Epidemics were earlier declared in Kaunas, Šiauliai, Panevėžys, Alytus, Kazlų Rūda and districts of Telšiai, Kaišiadorys, Lazdijai, Jonava, Radviliškis, Kėdainiai, Rokiškis, Prienai, and Raseiniai.

The center told BNS that more municipalities intended to declare epidemic shortly.

Flu epidemic can be declared after the number of flu and acute respiratory infections exceeds 100 per population of 10,000 over a week.

Lithuania has a total of 60 municipalities.
