The Center for Communicable Diseases and AIDS said on Wednesday that the infection was diagnosed to 16 women and 42 men in January-May this year.
Some 26 individuals contracted the virus through shared needles, 16 through heterosexual sex and three through homosexual intercourse. Way of contraction of another 13 people was not established. The average age of the new HIV patients is 36.
According to the press release, the highest number of new cases (21) was registered in Vilnius county, 11 in Kaunas, seven in Klaipėda, five in Šiauliai, four in Alytus and Telšiai counties, two in Tauragė and one in each of the counties of Panevėžys and Utena. Two of the diagnosed individuals are foreign citizens.
By 1 June, a total of 1,958 HIV cases have been reported in Lithuania (1,615 men and 343 women), the majority (69.6 pct) were infected through shared needles.
In 2011, the HIV rate in Lithuania was 5.15 cases per population of 100,000.

Number of new HIV cases doubles in Lithuania
Some 58 new HIV cases were registered in Lithuania over the first five months of 2012, indicating a considerable increase from 28 year-on-year.
