“Around 700 trucks, making an approximately 25-kilometer-long queue, are waiting for their turn to enter Lithuania’s territory via Medininkai. Around 350 trucks are waiting to leave Lithuania,” Gytis Vincevičius, a spokesman for the Lithuanian national road carriers’ association Linava, told BNS. Besides other reasons, the lines had grown longer due to a reduced number of officers at this particular checkpoint, he said.
During last weekend, trucks had to wait up to two days to enter Lithuania’s territory from Belarus via Medininkai, he said adding that the drivers waiting to cross the border on Monday would have to spend a similar period of time in the queue.
According to Vincevičius, some 270 trucks are waiting to enter Lithuania on the Belarusian side via the checkpoint of Šalčininkai, around 300 are queuing at Raigardas, and around 500, at Lavoriskes.
“We have advised to those coming back to choose alternative checkpoints. Moreover, the lines also grew longer due to holiday trade,” he said adding that the queues should decrease by Wednesday.
