Poland should start guarding the Baltic skies as of April in the framework of the NATO-sanctioned air-policing mission to station Allied fighter jets and contingents in Lithuania, local media said.

According to PAP news agency, the Polish government approached President Bronislaw Komorowski on Tuesday for approval of deployment of Polish forces in Lithuania between 15 April and 15 September. The report suggests that Poland should station four military airplanes MiG-29 and 100 airmen in Šiauliai to patrol the air-space of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

The NATO air-policing mission is currently performed by German Air Forces.

Allies have been guarding the Baltic skies since the three countries joined NATO in 2004, as the Balts do not have sufficient capacities to ensure air defense. NATO recently decided that the mission would be extended after 2014, with the nearest revision scheduled for 2018.
