Shale gas opponents stage protest in Vilnius

About 100 people assembled outside the government building in Vilnius on Tuesday to protest against plans to explore for shale gas in Lithuania.

The protesters chanted slogans demanding to preserve the nature and "not to sell Lithuania." They also voiced their opposition to genetically modified crops and the sale of land to foreigners.

Romualdas Ozolas, a signatory to the Lithuanian Act of Independence of March 11, 1990, said that politicians must ask for voters' approval to use Lithuania's natural resources.  

"The principal question is whether our elected (politicians) have the right to dispose of the underground wealth without the consent of the people. The Constitution says no," he told the protesters.
