Rita Stundienė, spokeswoman for the Prosecutor General's Office, confirmed that the request by district prosecutors was sent on Friday but the Office has not received it yet.

"The deputy chief prosecutor of Vilnius District Prosecutor's Office sent the request to the prosecutor general over the termination of MP Vareikis' immunity on Friday," she said.

Pursuant to the Statute of the Seimas, an MP cannot be prosecuted, detained or his/her freedom restrained in any other way without the approval of the Seimas.

Vilnius District Prosecutor's Office is currently carrying out a pre-trial investigation into minor bodily harm during an incident on May 4 when Vareikis, of the opposition Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrats, hit his wife while under the influence of alcohol.

Following the incident, Vareikis suspended his party membershio for a year.
