"We don’t have enough information yet to be able to objectively evaluate the existing situation as law enforcement officers have so far provided only a few details and have not made requests to Vilnius Municipality regarding possibilities for Adomavičius to continue working. But I made the decision today and satisfied Adomavičius' request to allow him to withdraw himself until 12 October," Zuokas said.
He added that more information would be received during this period for "us to be able to make necessary and rights decisions."
Prosecutors are considering asking the Central Electoral Commission to revoke Adomavičius' legal immunity. Adomavičius is currently running for parliament and has immunity from prosecution. He is number 48 on the Social Democratic Party list and is also a candidate in Lazdynai single-mandate constituency.
It was also announced on Friday that Adomavičius was suspending his party membership.
Earlier in the day, the Special Investigation Service said that a pre-trial investigation had been launched upon receipt of information that Vilnius City Vice-Mayor took a bribe worth over LTL 32,500 (EUR 9,400).
The service also said the bribe was accepted in exchange for a promise to influence municipal staff so that they made a favorable decision in a public tender for services worth LTL 8 million (EUR 2.32 million).
Meanwhile Vilnius Vice-Mayor Romas Adomavičius denies accusations. "I did not take a bribe," he said at a press conference on Friday.
