Matas Baltrukevičius. Three new members of Seimas, but less stability

Matas Baltrukevičius
On Sunday September 8, the first round of repeat Seimas elections was held in three electoral districts: Žirmūnai, Gargždai and Žiemgala. Repeat elections were needed because Aušra Maldeikienė was elected to the European Parliament, while Vitalijus Gailius and Bronius Markauskas became mayors. The elected MPs will work for a single year and voter turnout barely reached twenty percent. Due to the low voter interest, the results have little to say about the overall popularity of parties, but they could yield new emotional hues prior to the nearing Seimas elections.
