Energy Minister: Lithuania doesn't consider buying electricity from Kaliningrad nuclear plant

Lithuania is not considering buying electricity from a nuclear power plant under construction in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad because the country has not received answers from Russia and because it wants to have its own electricity production capacity, Energy Minister Jaroslav Neverovič says.

"We did not speak specifically about electricity imports from Russia during the meeting with Commissioner Günther Oettinger. In my opinion, it is too early to begin discussions at the European Commission level about any alternative options with third countries," Neverovič, who met with the EU energy commissioner in Vilnius on Thursday, said in a press release.

"The government has approved the working group's findings, which state very clearly that Lithuania must ensure its own electricity production," the minister said.

"Moreover, we should not forget that we have not yet received answers from our neighbor Russia to our questions regarding the power plant that is being built in Kaliningrad," he added.
