Former minister of agriculture suggests Lithuania make land sale to foreigners subject to EU payments to farmers

Kazimieras Starkevičius, a Conservative MP and former minister of agriculture, has proposed to the government to consider a possibility to reopen talks with European Union authorities on the extension of a transitional period for the sale of farm land to the Community’s citizens until the time when the direct payments to farmers in all EU Member States are brought into line.

Starkevičius has already registered a respective draft parliamentary decision in the Seimas (parliament) secretariat.

“We have failed to cut a deal on the size of direct payments, which were provided for in Lithuania’s EU Accession Treaty, and now we have a chance to continue the talks,” the MP told BNS.

According to Starkevičius, direct payments to Lithuania’s farmers would reach 75 percent of the payments received by other EU farmers in 2020. The existing ban on the sale of land to foreigners will expire in May 2014.
