Lithuania's prime minister-designate will not appoint Mindaugas Kuklierius as minister of agriculture

Social Democratic Prime Minister-Designate Algirdas Butkevičius announced on Tuesday his decision not to offer Conservative Mindaugas Kuklierius as candidate to lead the Ministry of Agriculture. Kuklierius had been nominated by the Labour Party and is currently a vice-minister of agriculture.

"In terms of the minister of agriculture, there's a big question. Most probably another candidacy will be submitted," Butkevičius told reporters at the Seimas.

Following a meeting with Kuklierius, Butkevičius said he had doubts over whether the candidate would implement the new center-left coalition's government program.

On Monday, Butkevičius said Kuklierius "is not a person from the outside. He's been working in this system, at the Ministry of Agriculture for many years. He's not a novice." But he also said he had many questions to the candidate.

Kuklierius is a member of the Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrats and run for parliament as the party's candidate.

Kuklierius is a graduate of the Lithuanian University of Agriculture, and has also studies in Denmark, the UK, and the US.
