"Amid discussions on the development of nuclear energy, the president would not want to express her specific position yet, as the government has yet to make up its mind and has to seek signature of a wider national agreement on energy on the basis of self-determination, and this way the government would depoliticize the energy sector as much as possible and would ensure the implementation of long-term energy goals," Udrėnas told Žinių Radijas (News Radio) radio station on Tuesday.
The president's adviser also stressed that nuclear energy would ensure energy security in the long term but this would only be one of several possible scenarios in Lithuania's attempt to secure energy supply. After political decisions on the directions of energy development are made, specific companies could decide on the implementation of projects, Udrėnas noted.
"If there was clear political self-determination on the directions of energy development, specific projects and the way they would be implemented could be left to companies. Both Lithuania, as well as Latvia and Estonia, and other regional partners, have strong companies, so, at the company level, decisions could be made on specific details," Udrėnas said.
