Lithuanian Prime Minister awarded 1 litas in damages for insult to his dignity

A Lithuanian court has ruled that Gediminas Degutis, husband of former Conservative Speaker of the Seimas Irena Degutienė, must pay 1 litas to Social Democratic Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius for publicly insulting his dignity and reputation. He was also ordered to issue a disclaimer.

On Wednesday, Vilnius City District Court partly satisfied the prime minister's lawsuit against Degutis, who allegedly made false claims about Butkevičius.

The court ruled that claims made by Degutis on 8 March last year published in news website alfa.lt - that Butkevičius "will build authority for himself and for his party by libeling others" - did not correspond to reality and caused damage to the prime minister's dignity and honor.

Degutis said it in defense of his son, who had been accused by Butkevičius of making illegal financial operation in the already-closed bank Snoras.

Degutis was ordered to issue a disclaimer through the same news website.

Degutis can still lodge an appeal.
