Lithuanian prosecutor general turns to ethics watchdog over MPs poking into pre-trial investigations

Lithuanian Prosecutor General Darius Valys has turned to the parliamentary Commission on Ethics and Procedures over members of the parliamentary Anticorruption Commission who demand information on pre-trial investigations.

"The ongoing situation when members of the Seimas want to know specific data from pre-trial investigation and are trying to take over functions of controlling prosecutors' activities is intolerable," Valys said in a statement.

He said he had refused to provide information to the Anticorruption Commission as it is exceeding its mandate.

The Anticorruption Commission asked Valys last week to provide information on certain pre-trial investigations. Commission Chairman Ligitas Kernagis told journalists following a commission meeting the commission had not received answers to certain questions, and commission members were dissatisfied.

The prosecutor general has been summoned to the Anticorruption Commission's meeting on Wednesday.
