Politician's wife challenges her husband in parliamentary elections

Wife of Remigijus Ačas, mayor of the western Lithuanian town of Raseiniai, has announced her plans to challenge her husband in the upcoming general elections in October and run por parliament in the same constituency.

"My husband is on his own, and I am on my own. I think I have more advantages in one areas and he has more advantages in others," Vida Ačienė told BNS on Wednesday, explaining her decision to compete with her husband.

"We might even go to a run-off together," Ačienė, a civil servant, said.

She is not a member of any political party, and the Central Electoral Commission has registered her as an independent candidate in Raseiniai single candidate constituency.

Meanwhile, Ačas represents the Order and Justice Party. Asked to comment on his wife's plans, Ačas said his spouse was a free person.

"My wife is a free person. What can I do?" the politician told BNS.

The Seimas elections are scheduled for 14 October.
