The proposal to re-appoint Vaigauskas to the post was backed by 70 of Lithuania's 141 Seimas members, 24 voted against and 21 abstained. Three ballot papers were invalidated.
Vaigauskas has been heading the Central Electoral Commission for the past 18 years and will serve in the post for another four years following the Thursday's vote.
The first attempt to approve the new line-up of the commission failed on Tuesday after the ballot came a few votes short. Parliamentary Speaker Irena Degutienė then proposed Audrius Kasinskas of the Interior Ministry's Legal Department for the position.
In search for a compromise, Degutienė proposed Vaigauskas as candidate on Thursday regardless of her earlier statement that the electoral body, just like any other state institution, would benefit from a change.
Under the law, the Central Electoral Commission should be formed between 120 and 140 days until the nearest general elections, which are scheduled for 14 October this year.
Thursday was the deadline for approving the new electoral body.
