Afghan forces officially take over responsibility for Ghor security from Lithuania

A Lithuanian-manned Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) handed over the responsibilities for security in the Afghan province of Ghor to the local administration in a solemn ceremony in provincial capital Chagcharan on Thursday.

From now on, security in Ghor will be ensured by national security forces of Afghanistan – the army and the police – after eight years of Lithuanian efforts to restore the province, the Lithuanian Defense Ministry says in a press release.

Lithuania launched its PRT in Ghor in 2005.

After handing over the responsibilities to Afghan national security forces, Lithuania plans to withdraw its troops and finish the PRT mission this fall.

Nevertheless, Lithuanian troops will remain in other parts of Afghanistan, including the special operators in the disturbed southern districts.
