Lithuania's deportees and political prisoners kick off traditional assembly

The traditional meeting of Lithuania's former deportees, political prisoners and participants of struggles for freedom is starting in Ariogala, Raseiniai district, on Friday.

The event will kick off with a parade of the participants from Ariogala's central church to the valley of the River Dubysa. The parade will be accompanied by the Guard of Honor and the Orchestra of the Armed Forces. All participants will stand in a minute of silence to honor victims of the regime, those killed for Lithuania's freedom and those who did not return from deportation.

Among participant of the event should be Defense Minister Juozas Olekas, Chief of Defense Lieutenant General Arvydas Pocius and Commander of the National Defense Volunteer Forces Colonel Romualdas Moldaris.

During the Soviet rule, more than 275,000 Lithuanian residents were deported between 1940 and 1952.
