Lithuanians pick Barack Obama's re-election as world event of the year

People in Lithuania have for the 5th consecutive year picked the US President Barack Obama as the world person of the year and the US presidential elections that led to his re-election as the world event of 2012, shows a poll published in the Lietuvos Rytas daily.

According to the survey by market and public opinion research company Baltijos Tyrimai (Baltic Surveys), 35 percent of respondents voted for Obama as the world person of the year.

Some 6.2 percent favored Russian President Vladimir Putin, followed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel (4.1 pct), Pope Benedict XVI (1.8 pct), British Queen Elizabeth II, and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko (1.2 pct each).

The US presidential elections was voted the most outstanding event of 2012 by 45.4 percent of those polled, while 34.2 percent picked to London Olympics. 18.4 percent said the most important event was the hurricane Sandy that devastated the US East coast, 9.3 percent picked the Russian presidential elections and Putin's re-election, 7.7 percent pointed to financial crisis in Greece.

Last year, Lithuanians chose the Japanese earthquake and tsunami and the consequent accident at the Fukushima nuclear plant as the world event of the year.
