01:00 NOMAD'S LAND - MEKONG
 
Continuing the theme of itinerancy, Christophe Cousin takes us on this new journey through two countries: Vietnam and Cambodia, on a river trip up the Mekong to meet the people who live by it. After a miraculous haul of ‘rice-fish’ in the South China Sea, where the river ends its own journey, he goes into the delta to meets some prawn fishermen, or ‘aquatic tramps’ as they are known locally. Christophe then boards a taxi-boat and goes to the floating market of Can Thô. After accompanying a family on its way to sell pineapples on the ‘nine-dragon river’, he arrives at the border and leaves the bustle of Vietnam behind him. In Cambodia, he returns to dry land and gets to know some unusual salesmen who have come from India to sell mosquito nets. Finally, our explorer ends his voyage in the gemstone mines of Ratanakiri.

In this incredible eco-system of mangroves, reefs and sandy sea beds of the labyrinth of small islands and channels that make up the archipelago of Los Jardines de la Reina, in Cuba, you can find marine birds, many different species of fish and mammals native to this area such as the hutia. However, the main attraction of this place are the sharks that come here to feed in great numbers. So in the company of an expert diver Noel and a biologist Andrea, we meet the two principle species of shark that populate these waters: the silk sharks, Noel’s faithful playmates and the most feared, the Caribbean reef shark. Noel takes us underwater water scuba-diving with Andrea in apnoea: they both show us that these sharks are not dangerous.

It is in Sardinia that we discover the secrets of red coral, the underwater jewel of the Mediterranean Sea, where in Alghero you can find the centre for both fishing and coral processing formed in the reign of Peter IV of Aragon, a coral that is collected and processed with great skill. On board a traditional Turkish boat we sail towards the protected Marine area of Capo Caccia - Isola Piana, the only place in the Mediterranean Sea that red coral transplanting has been successful. With its strange dark and clear light plays, we go underwater into the Neptune Caves, where the walls of the caves are covered with magnificent branches of red coral surrounded by cnidarians and sponges. An expert coral harvester explains to us how they collect the coral at about 80 to 100 metres below and then an artisan shows us how they process and work this red gold of the Mediterranean Sea.

Lissa Doumani is a pastry chef from Napa Valley, California who runs two starred-restaurants with her Japanese husband. There, they board a sailboat and go through the Beagle Channel, across the Straight of Le Maire, which is one of the most dangerous seas in the world, to get to the uninhabited island. .
