Melianas of Liberal and Center Union will take the position as of Monday.

The president signed the degree after receipt of information about the candidate's check under the Corruption Prevention Law, the President's Office said.

The position of interior minister has been vacant since the resignation of Liberal Centrist Raimundas Palaitis amid criticism of the ruling conservatives over sacking of top officers of the Financial Crimes Investigation Service.

Melianas graduated from the Vilnius Trade College in 1982 and graduated from Vilnius University with a degree in economics in 1992 and with a degree in social work in 2000.

In 1997, he was elected to the Vilnius City Council and worked as chairman of Social Affairs Committee. In 2000-2004, he was a member of parliament, elected through the list of Lithuanian Liberal Movement. He worked in the Social Affairs and Labor Committee and headed the body in the 2000-2001 period.

In 2006-2008, he was the chief of the Vilnius county.

Melianas has been member of Lithuanian Liberal Movement since its establishment. After the union merged with Lithuanian Center Union and Modern Christian Democratic Union, he was elected to the board of the new political force, Liberal and Center Union.

He is one of the 12 deputy chairmen of the union, also serving as deputy leader of the parliamentary Social Affairs and Labor Committee.
