"I am certain that Lithuania will build a very strong energy policy," José Manuel Barroso said during a joint press briefing with Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius held after their meeting in Brussels.

The European Union aims to put an end to energy islands by 2015.

Speaking about Lithuania's EU presidency in the second half of this year, Barroso said that the country still has a lot of work to do after the Irish presidency, but added that he believes that Lithuania is ready for that.

"I really believe that Lithuania is well prepared and focused," he said.

Butkevičius said during the briefing, "Our duty is to balance the interests of all member states. I am confident that the presidency will run smooth."

Barroso also said that the promotion of job creation, growth, and a single market are key to European recovery.

Ten out of 15 members of the Lithuanian Cabinet are in Brussels on Wednesday for meetings with heads of the key EU institutions. This is a traditional visit by the government of the country that will take over the next EU presidency.
