Lithuanian ambassadors advised to be more active on Twitter

In the run-up to Lithuania's presidency over the European Council, the country's Foreign Ministry has issued a recommendation for ambassadors to be more active on the Twitter social network and other latest means of communications.

„The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised heads of diplomatic missions to take a better advantage of the new means of communications, including the social network Twitter, for dissemination of information, as they are solid additional tools of providing information to a larger audience about their operations, which is extremely important during the period of EU presidency,“ the ministry said in response to an inquiry from BNS.

According to the statement, experience of other countries – the United States, Slovenia, Sweden and United Kingdom – shows that Twitter has become increasingly popular among diplomats, serving as an important communication tool of diplomatic missions.

„We note that a large part of Lithuania's diplomatic missions and their heads have been successfully and actively using social networks, such as Facebook or Twitter, for some time to give publicity to their work,“ reads the comment.

Among active users of Twitter are Lithuania's Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius, Lithuania's mission at the EU, ambassadors to the US and Sweden. Brief English-language messages are also posted by teams of President Dalia Grybauskaite, with Lithuanian-language posts made by the office of Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius.
