Social democrat and long-time MP Česlovas Juršėnas to retire from political career

The Social Democratic Party of Lithuania has finalized its candidate list for the upcoming Seimas election. It does not contain political heavyweight Česlovas Juršėnas, but includes Lithuania's Ambassador to Estonia Juozas Bernatonis who wants to exchange his diplomatic career for a seat in the parliament, the Lietuvos Rytas daily reports.

Party leader Algirdas Butkevičius has confirmed that Bernatonis, 58, who is to assume his position as Lithuania's ambassador to Armenia in September, will be in the top-20 on the party's candidate list.

"I believe Bernatonis has a stronger wish to continue his political career in Lithuania," Butkevičius said.

Currently on vacation, the ambassador said he would continue his diplomatic career in case his parliamentary ambitions do not come to fruition.

Lithuanian laws do not ban diplomats from running for parliament.

Meanwhile Lithuania's political heavyweight and long-term MP Česlovas Juršėnas, 74, has decided to retire. Butkevičius confirmed that Juršėnas would not run for parliament in October.
